Immediately after the first murder Gilmore took a 14-year-old to a drive-in to see One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. The movie freaked the kid out — she had previously been institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital following a bad LSD trip that ended in gang-rape. April was shrieking in the truck, scratching at the air and demanding to leave. Gary was having the night from hell. He’d kill again the following evening and be executed within seven months. Fuck the ACLU, he said. Fuck those blacks. Let’s do it. Nike took his last words for a marketing slogan. I guess there’s nothing more American than that.
