Operation Broken Heart. Operation When You Wish Upon A Star. [VERSION 2 REWRITE]. New Year’s Eve, 1970, two men celebrate by abducting a girl from San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury. It’s heavy, but that connection is really the point. Or, more precisely, the motion between two points is the connection. Basically nothing exists except in motion. Nothing exists unless it’s transactional. There has to be a joining, a mindbridge. A convergence of the twain. And the blank spots in the recordings, the missing gaps? Well, as forensic scientists, we can live with that.
Criminal profiling, as the FBI pioneered it and as I present it in this online lecture series, may be defined as “a process used to analyze a specific crime or series of crimes in order to develop a behavioral composite of an unknown offender.” For many reasons, geography is of vital importance in a serial murder investigation. Commonalities among the places where the killer encountered his victims and the dump sites where he left the bodies can reveal a pattern that links cases together.
